Traditionally, typical family trees starts from you or me and grows up and down. I think this is how Geni or other commercial cloud services works today. Now, if both trees can be linked somehow through your aunt together with several other trees that cropped out, all trees will keep on growing synchronously with each other. That's how it's been done today so several trees keeps on cropping up seemingly absent of any relationships among them. It makes sense because you were not part of their bloodline. Now your aunt and cousins, and the rest of their generations will show up in both trees and you'll likely will not be part of their tree. If the family of your aunt wants to put together their own tree, they will cut a branch of your tree and plant new one exclusive of their clan. Technically, she's your aunt but she is outside of your bloodline although she still belongs to the main tree. Let's say you have the wife of you uncle in your tree. That would be more effective than going through thousands of records manually and search for information that is worth to be added to your own tree. It might be permitted to export their GEDCOM files or parts of it so that you can import them into your webtrees installation as an additional tree and have webtrees check the merged tree for duplicates.
